The Landskron Castle
Landskron castle is a magnificent edifice in ruins built on a shelf. It is perched at 135m above ground level in north-east Villach. Nowadays, the remnants of the castle host a bird of prey farming center which sets shows in the summer months and a gastronomic restaurant with a wonderful panoramic view on Carinthia. Besides, an impressive colony of Japanese macaques lives on the mountainside, also called "Affenberg" (the monkeys mountain). The monkeys are free and the colony can be visited.
About the Landskron Castle
The sheld uderpining the Landskrin Castle has been inhabited since 800 BC. In 878, the grounds on which the monastery was to be built were offered to the Capuchin Altötting in Bavaria. Later, several noble families owned them. In the middle of the XIV th century, the Counts of Sternberg started to build a castle, first cited in old document under the name of "Burg Landskron" in 1351. In the XVI th century, the Khevenhüller family acquired the castle and rehabilitated it into a sumptuous Renaissance building. Lightning triggered numerous fires and the last one in 1812, the roof was not fixed and the Landskron castle deserted.
In 1953, Hans Maresch built amongst the remnants of the Landskron Castle a high standing Café-Restaurant, managed after his death by his sister, and since 1982 by his daughters. Today, the restaurant is still a cherished place by the visitors and regulars of any age for the high quality food and for its privileged location allowing people to enjoy a panoramic view on the Karawanken, the Julian Alps, the Villacher Talbecken, the Ossiacher See and the Kanzelhöhe for its easy access.
Apart from the restaurant, visitors from all over the world will be mesmerized by the numerous exceptional attractions focused on nature: the ornithological station of Lanskron with its falconry show, the "Affenberg” –a colony of free Japanese macaques living in a vast reserve having high trees, ponds and playgrounds appropriate for monkeys and accessible to visitors desirous to observing them closer!
